Well a new update was just released for Railo and we wanted to upgrade right away. There was a lot of buzz on the various lists of how long it took people to apply the update using the built in features in the Server Administrator, so we decided to time it.
It took only 39.5 seconds to apply the update. That is just incredible. I’ve been using ColdFusion since version 1.5, in fact back then we called it Cold Fusion, and have used various CFML engines during the past decade. But this built it upgrade process is the smoothest I have experience from any vendor.
I’m thinking of signing up with you guys to trial some Railo Updates. So what is your standard policy with upgrades? Do you always upgrade this quickly? And what is the testing process (i.e. what if the new beta version breaks something)?
Scott,
Railo 3.1 is still in Beta thus we are being a little more aggressive in our update policy. Thus we are updating to latest releases sooner rather than later. Once it goes golden in the next couple of weeks we will implement a more stringent update policy. We will first of all let the dust settle on the new updates, test them for compatibility in our our test lab, make a general announcement to the clients announcing our intention to update, and schedule the maintenance window far enough in to the future so everyone can be prepared for the update. For all of our updates we take full backups before hand and have a recovery plan in place in case Murphy shows his face.
By the way, I saw that you signed up for a Trial account, let me know if you have any questions or need any assistance.
